Health Science

Healthcare is one of the fastest growing industries in the U.S.  Upon successful completion of the Health Science program at DCCTC, students have the opportunity to take the CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) exam and/or the PCT (Patient Care Technician) exam and earn their first nationally recognized accreditation. Advanced knowledge and certifications offer great advantages for students who wish to go directly into the workplace or pursue further education in the healthcare field. 

Students have the opportunity to participate in numerous community-based service projects and learning experiences.  Through the HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America) student organization, they are able to participate in the state leadership conference, various competitions and apply for scholarships.

Health Science I

Credits:  2
Prerequisite:  None
Site:  DCCTC / Trolley Road / Woodland HS
Students gain entry-level knowledge and skills to enter the health care field. Content includes anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, health systems, health science career research, health & wellness, legal & ethical practices protective measures for workers and patients, medical communication skills, nutrition, growth and development and medical math. To be eligible to enroll in Health Science II, students must satisfactorily pass all modules in Health Science I.

Health Science II

Credits:  2     
Prerequisites:  Health Science I
Site:  DCCTC / Trolley Road / Woodland HS

Level II health science students will select to focus on an area of study and gain intensive “hands on” field experience.

Areas of study include, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Patient Care Technician (PCT), Veterinary Assistant and Patient Data Collection.  

Students are required to participate in a 40-hour internship at a local healthcare facility. Technical skills mastered and certifications awarded will afford students an advantage when applying for employment or admission to college.

Health Science III

Credits: 1
Prerequisites: Health Science I & II
Site:  DCCTC / Trolley Road / Woodland HS

Health Science III is a work-based learning class for students who have successfully completed Health Science I & II. This course allows students to gain valuable work experience as well as high school credit.  Students must be recommended by their instructor and provide their own transportation.

Mrs. Connor holds a BSN degree from the University of SC Upstate. She has been a nurse for 20+ years with an extensive background in cardiovascular care, rural home health, and surgical clinical quality management. She is excited to be a part of the DCCTC family.
