Environmental + Natural Resources
According to government statistics, the agriculture industry is a $42 billion business in the State of South Carolina. With more than 25,200 farms spread across 4.9 acres of land, farming and farm suppliers are an economic powerhouse. The Environmental and Natural Resources program at DCCTC focuses on obtaining the skills required for a job in agriculture, natural resources and wildlife. Students explore plant and soil science, wildlife management, land management and the identification of regional flora and fauna.
The class also hosts a chapter of Future Farmers of America (FFA) allowing students to compete in a variety of statewide agricultural competitions, attend the state fair and join the DCCTC student fishing and sporting clays teams.

Prerequisite: Student must have completed a program in Environmental and Natural Resources as well as have a satisfactory instructor recommendation. Students who have completed the Environmental and Natural Resources program at DCCTC and desire work experience in a related field can choose to further enhance their skills by enrolling in a work based learning course. Students will learn daily duties and participate in in-house training and events. Students must provide their own transportation to work sites.

“I am excited to use hands on experiences to teach kids the basics from subsistence agriculture to commercial greenhouse and field production.”
Dr. Henderson grew up on his family’s farm and has more than 30 years of beef cattle production and subsistence agriculture experience. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural Mechanization from Clemson University, a Master’s of Science in Crop and Soil Science from University of Georgia and a PhD in Plant and Environmental Sciences with an emphasis in tobacco research from Clemson University. In addition to teaching, he owns and operates his own vegetable farm on John’s Island.
